Xela (Quetzaltenango),
Quetzaltenango Guatemala

"Xela" (Quetzaltenango), the second largest city in Guatemala, is located in a department by the same name. It is a bustling hub of activity, though its agricultural roots are found right outside the city.

Xela is now a busy city with building in progress in every direction. Photo by Cheryl Guerrero 2001.

The Maya woman's statue at the entrance to 'Xela', was designed in 1953 and constructed in 1977. Today, women in traje are rare, and rarer still is anyone wearing the wide head wrap in the busy city. Photo by Cheryl Guerrero 2005.
